Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen have been living apart for “more than a month,” a source tells PEOPLE.

The longtime couple have been apart for the past six weeks as Brady, 45, returns to the NFL and Bündchen, 42, travels.

“Gizelle is busy with her life now and has been spending time away from Tom in Miami and New York,” says an insider.

A second source adds: “During the season, they live separate lives.”

Sources told PEOPLE that Brady’s decision to retire was a turning point for the supermodel, who said she wants to be more present with their children — son Benjamin Rein, 12, and daughter Vivian Lake, 9. , along with Brady’s son John Edward, 15, with ex Bridget Moynahan.

But a third source says the football legend is making sure to find time for his family.

“No other husband takes six months off a year to be completely devoted to just his family,” says the source. “And during the season, yes, he travels for games and trains, but he’s also with his family a lot.”

The couple owns a $17 million home in Miami’s upscale Indian Creek Village.

“They both want to live in Miami, they love it and have a lot of friends there,” says the first source.

They add: “I don’t think there’s an official split at this point, they’d like to work things out.”

Brady previously had an 11-day absence from the Buccaneers last month after being excused to “deal with some personal matters.”

He addressed the absence to reporters after his return, saying: “Everybody has different situations that they deal with, and we all have unique challenges in our lives. I’m 45, man. There’s a lot going on, so you just have to try to you find life as best you can. You know, it’s an ongoing process.”

The seven-time Super Bowl champion and his Brazilian model wife are “hitting a rough patch,” a source told PEOPLE last week: “There is a lot of tension. She was so happy when he announced he was leaving and she wasn’t thrilled at all when he did it again.”

They added that Brady “knows this is his last season” in the NFL “if he wants to stay married.”

Brady and Bündchen married a month after becoming engaged in an intimate ceremony on February 26, 2009, at St. Monica’s Catholic Church in California.
