The murder mystery is hot right now. Oscar-nominated Rian Johnson’s fascinating whodunit Knives out revived the genre in 2019. Christopher Miller’s The Afterparty, a comedic, episodic spin on the genre, was a big hit for Apple TV+ earlier this year. And Johnson just revealed one Knives out follow, Glass onionlast weekend at the Toronto International Film Festival ahead of its Netflix debut in November.

Between Knives out editions are coming See how they runa playful and witty Agatha Christie tribute from director Tom George that follows a seasoned London detective (Sam Rockwell) who teams up with an inexperienced constable (Saoirse Ronan) to solve a murder case involving a Hollywood director (Adrien Brody) and the cast of a 1950s West End stage production.

It’s another colorful entry in the eclectic oeuvre of Rockwell (whose Oscar-winning role in Three billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri premiered five years ago this fall). The actor spoke to Yahoo Entertainment about the film, its historical genre, and where he holds that Oscar.

Yahoo Entertainment: What would you say you had the opportunity to do as an actor? See how they run that you haven’t done on screen before?

Sam Rockwell: Well, the British accent was definitely a first movie. I had done it in the theater. And I’ve played a grumpy drunk guy once before, but never a detective, I don’t think. That was fun.

The film is incredibly self-aware, being very meta at points for its genre. Adrien Brody’s character even says in voiceover: “It’s crazy. You’ve seen one. You’ve seen it all.” But obviously you have to differentiate yourself. You should try to mix the genre. What did you find fresh about it?

We aspired to be in tones, like Death of Stalin the The Big Lebowskibut obviously paying homage Murder on the Orient Express and Colombo or things like that.

you had seen Knives out? Obviously that was such a sensation and I felt it revitalized the genre in a lot of ways. Was that on your mind at all?

Absolutely. Yes. For sure. There seems to be an appetite for this at the moment and that’s thanks to Knives out. Let’s hope this gets the same reaction.

What did you like about working so closely with Saoirse? She is so funny in it.

They are really funny in real life. Very self-deprecating. Very, very sweet. Just like a normal person. You know, she’s just not burdened with all the Hollywood nonsense. She really is just a nice girl from Cork [Ireland].

This film straddles show business in many ways, between the worlds of theater and film. Was it a draw for you? Do you appreciate when Hollywood comes on screen?

Yes, it looks a bit like that Get Shorty In this way. Harris Dickinson is really funny [Richard] Attenborough. I just play him as a coward and a very vain guy. And David Oyelowo as the narcissistic playwright. This is all very funny. Adrian, Reece [Shearsmith]. It’s really great.

Here’s another Searchlight Pictures movie for you. You’ve had some success with the studio, obviously, with all the awards you’ve won for it Three signs. Where do you keep your Oscar?

I have it on a shelf in my living room.

So in a fairly traditional location.

Pretty traditional. Yes.

What did winning the Oscar mean to you? Is this the instant number one or career highlight that people assume it is?

It’s definitely a bucket list thing. SNL. Act American Buffalo on Broadway. Those are kind of like bucket list things, you know? But you never know when you’ll get that kind of fame. You just do your job and do the best you can. You know? Who knows if they will see the movie?

See how they run playing now
