Anne, the Princess Royal and only daughter of the late Queen, has always been a force to be reckoned with.

But as she stepped up to carry out the tasks required before the funeral on Monday, including escorting her mother’s coffin from Balmoral to Aberdeen and then from Edinburgh to London over four days, the 72-year-old sister in the new O King is coming to the fore perhaps more than ever.

She is a true judge of style. Princess Anne’s trendy looks like straight leg jeans, cowboy boots and sporty sunglasses are now often worn on the catwalk. Also known for her vibrant pieces, she is the patron of the UK Fashion and Textile Association.

She is the hardest working royal. Considered to be one of the busiest members of the Royal Family, she held the most engagements in 2021 at 387, just beating her brother Charles.

She foiled her own kidnapping attempt. In 1974, her chauffeur-driven Rolls Royce stopped a car with gunman Ian Ball, who shot the driver, security officer and a journalist. When he told him to get out of her car, she replied, “Not likely,” bailing out soon after.

She ensured her children lived a normal life. When she married her first husband, Mark Phillips, she is said to have declined an Earldom. Despite royal titles for children usually being inherited through the male line, when the offer was still made, Princess Anne declined.

She was the first royal to remarry after divorce. She divorced Phillips in 1992 and remarried Timothy Laurence, the late Queen’s first child to do so. He bypassed the restrictive Church of England laws that even apply and instead tied the knot in Scotland.
